During its attempt to take on the market in the United States, Renault marketed the R5 under the name “Renault Le Car”. The USA proved to be a winning bet for Renault, and so Heuliez produced a specific version inspired by American vans in 1979 . The Car Van lost its windows and its rear window in favour of polyester panels pierced with portholes. The look was complemented by bumpers taken from the Renault 5 Alpine and a spare wheel on the tailgate, as well as a specific rainbow decoration and specific rims. The interior was also completely modified. Production was planned for 200 units, and was finally integrated into the range of the manufacturer. The customer was to supply a Renault 5 and pay the conversion cost of 12,500 francs, or 40% of the price of the car

It’s always something when the inventor of the GTI presents a new version of the mythical creature. This Polo tries its hardest to be more bourgeois and comfortable than its predecessor, but its sports roots are still just below the surface. The engine is pushing 125 hp at a whopping 6500 rpm and the chassis has been completely redesigned. With new rims, a radiator grill, side wings as well as the markings in the cockpit are all there to remind us that the only true objective of a GTI is to be a delight for its lucky driver.
Nowadays, novel liveries for rally cars during try-outs or for the presentation of a model are too numerous to count. The proof of this statements lies with the striped livery of the Polo R WRC’17 which never saw the light of day. In the 1990s, Renault was a pioneer. During the presentation of the Renault Clio Maxi, a yellow and black “striped” livery (the manufacturer’s colours) was used. It was a far cry from the uniform grey that would dress the Clio Maxi afterwards. An original and eye-catching decor that would go down in history.
